iPhone App Reviews

Why did the site name change?   Yes, I did change the name of the site. I changed from iPhoneAppTestLab.com to TechCastNow.com.  Several factors lead to this decision including the desire to branch out and cover a broader range of technical topics.  We'll still do app reviews, but I also hope to include reviews and blog articles on other current technology topics and trends. Previous reviews will be retained and the links to those articles will continue to work.  Feel free to contact me if you have questions or comments.

Web Talk by Chris Chauvin (80%)

Reviewers Comments (Alan Holbrook):

I'm have a long commute and listen to a lot of podcast and audio books. I'm teaching a new class this term and have always found it useful ro review my class notes prior to the class. I have all my notes on my private web page so I decided I'd like look for an app that would read the notes to me. I tried a couple different apps and decided I liked this one.

Web Talk is an app that reads the contents of web pages.  It's limited to a single male and single female voice. They are basic computerized voices that you wouldn't want to use for listening to a novel, but suffice for my type of application as a utility to listen to basic web content.  There are controls for volume and speech rate.  One of the best features is that the app provides a 'bookmarklet' that lets you launch it for any page you're currently viewing in Safari.  If you're not familiar with a bookmarklet it's a short piece of javascript that can be saved as a bookmark in the browser.  In this case it creates a bookmark that, when accessed while viewing a web site, copies the current URL and launches Web Talk with that page. You can set it to automatically start playing or use manual control.  One nice feature is that you can use the iPhone's copy feature to select the text you want Web Talk to read.   When you select text, as though you were going to copy and paste, you can tap the play button and it will read that text to you.  In the automated mode it attempts to read the whole page. On complex web pages with lots of <div> tags or frames it may not always start in the right place.

It has very basic built in help and the web support site is limited to a youtube video demo.  Over all I found this worked well for my purpose.  For 99 cents it's worth having on hand.

StudioApp Lite by Krasidy LLC (82%)

Reviewers Comments (Alan Holbrook):

I was looking for an app to record podcast while on the road. I tried this app using a low end Plantronics 326 Stereo Headset. The app preformed well and sound quality was what I expected from the low end microphone. The interface was reasonably intuitive, but the app lacks built-in help and the support web site was sparse.

StudioApp allows you to record a single track at a time while listening to the instrumental track or other tracks your've previously recorded. The free version I demo'd had a single instrumental background track. The paid version allows you to purchase additional instrumental tracks via their "Instrumental Store". I did a little hacking around and found I could upload additional instrumental files using Phone View or iPhone Explorer. I uploaded a wave file I had handy. It didn't sound exactly right, but I'm sure with a little experimenting you will find the right format. After you've created your new hit you can export to your PC via WiFi.

Overall I think this has potential and I'm going to explore it's use more as time permits.

PocketCam by Senstic (74%)

Reviewers Comments (Alan Holbrook):

PocketCam for the iPhone is a neat concept that turns you iPhone into a wireless web cam.  It connects via your local WiFi network and allows you to see the iPhone camera on your desktop. To use this you'll need to download and install a free desktop companion app available for both Mac and Windows.  I tested it with the built-in iSight camera on my MacBook Pro.  The concept works, but I had a hard time keeping it connected and had to restart the app on my iPhone and desktop several times. Image quality was so so and it didn't have an autorotate feature. Good idea but I think it still needs a little more polish.

These services include the ability send text and email messages, call contacts, search the Web, update your Facebook or Twitter status and much more by just speaking into their phone. "
Reviewer's Description:
"I downloaded this a couple months ago and just got around to trying it. It's another WOW app. Vlingo is a voice recognition app that uses your voice to initiate a variety of functions. Similar to the Google voice app for searching and the built-in iPhone voice recognition for making a call or picking something to play from you iPod app, Vlingo combines starting a search, making a phone call, map lookups, Twitter updates, or Facebook updates into a single app.

I tested it against the Google voice app and it did a better job of voice recognition. I had great results in all my tests which included everything but the Facebook update. Vlingo apparently learns and gets better at voice recognition the more you use it.

One test I did was to speak a mathematical problem, '16000 times 60 times 60 times 24 divide by 8 times 30' and got the answer, 5,184,000,000 back in about 10 seconds. By the way that's the amount of bandwidth in bytes used to stream a 16k audio stream for a full month. I also used it to speak a message that I then copied and pasted into an email.

Good help, nice support web site, and a logical interface make this a keeper. Did I mention it's FREE.

I'd love to see them add a feature that would all speech to SMS. "

Developer's Description:
"Pocket Universe is the ideal astronomy program for those keen to learn about the night sky. The unique display is generated dynamically depending on your location and time, and then rendered in 3D for a super fast response - flick the sky and it spins around you. With Motion Tracking, the image will change as you hold the iPhone or iPod Touch up in front of you, making it easy to match what you see on the screen to the real sky. With the iPhone 3GS's built-in compass, you can point the iPhone to any spot in the sky and instantly see what you are observing. Use the ""Show Me"" option to guide you to objects - it's never been easier to learn about the night sky. "
Reviewer's Description:
"I was just surfing the app store and came across this. I've always been an astronomy fan and am very impressed with this app. When I first tried it I was amazed at what it did. Full of info on astronomy including news and a breakdown of what's available for viewing in tonight's sky.  The 'Motion Tracking' is truly impressive. It makes you realize how aware the iPhone is of your position on the planet. Hold the iPhone up to the sky and the Planetarium view changes to match your view. Names of stars, planets, constellations, and Messier objects are displayed. Move the iPhone to position the crosshair on an object and the name and brightness magnitude is displayed.

It's been cloudy here in east central Florida and the waxing gibbous moon has been very bright, but my country view did allow me to test it on a few bright nighttime objects. VERY COOL! I showed to a few of my aerospace engineer coworkers and a couple had to download it on the spot. Even the 'I don't need no stinking iPhone' holdouts had to say WOW!

Lots of information on the night sky, decent built-in help, a nice support web site, and even a built-in constellation quiz make this a great learning tool.

This app, a pair of decent binoculars and you'll be on your way to a great time viewing and learning the cosmos. Kudos to the developer."

JotNot will save your original picture and an enhanced version into your photo library. All the processing occurs on your iPhone itself so sensitive or confidential information never leaves your control."
Reviewer's Description:
JotNot has a nice selection of preset scan configurations for receipts, documents, whiteboards, light text, and photography that optimize the scans. You also have the option to manually adjust several parameters that affect the scan quality. JotNot did very good job of scanning a color document, such as an magazine ad or flyer, to a black-on-white PDF. JotNot’s scan quality was at the top of the list for the apps I tested that offered in-app processing. It doesn’t store the converted PDF in the app, but offers several ways to transfer the file. You can send by email, transfer to an Evernote account, or transfer to your PC by activating the built-in WiFi server. In-app help was OK and the web site offered decent support also. A top contender.

"It's a digital scanner and fax in your pocket! Your phone is suddenly a business center – scan, print and fax wherever you go. Scan documents to turn them into digital files you can store, share, and fax."
Reviewer's Description:
"Several of the business card scanners I’ll discuss later offere an OCR feature. ScanR Business Center was the only ‘document scanner’ that offered OCR. An online account is required and is part of the $22.99 app price. The account is labeled ‘iPhone Permanent’ and indicates unlimited pages and 100 Faxes. They also offer a ‘ScanR Pro’ account for $4.99 per month or $29.90 per year that provides unlimited scans and no ads. This was a little confusing because I didn’t see any ads on my test scans and the iPhone Permanent account already indicates unlimited pages. The app doesn’t offer a lot of image adjustments on the phone, but the resulting scan quality is good. You can view your scanned documents on their site, automatically receive them by email, or share them with someone else online. You can also send an SMS with a link to the online version of your document. One nice feature is the ability to have a document sent to a fax machine, thereby offering a way to print from the iPhone while traveling. Scanned images are converted and saved to your account on their site as PDF, a photo JPG of the original, JPG of the converted document, and a plain text file of the OCR’d contents of the document. On the site you can do a text search and all documents that contain that text will be displayed. Web site support is strong with good FAQ style help. A very high-end app targeted at business users who need to capture, access, and share documents on the go. "

"Transform your iPhone into a scanner...and much more ! Use iPhone to take snapshots of documents. iScanIt makes them look as though they have been scanned on a flatbed scanner.  iScanIt is a portage of the famous windows software named snapter: take a photograph of a document or a white board, choose options, process the document, and send it by email. iScanIt solves per-spective problem, sharpens the image and improves color. Then iScanIt save your document as image (JPG), or as a real PDF document, and send it by email. iScanIt is also an efficient way to save all your business cards and receipts, as well as whiteboards in classrooms or meetings. You can process as many pages as you want, and save the result as a PDF file on your iPhone, or send it immediately by email.     - Color correction of the doc. - Perspective correction of the doc. - Save as PDF (multi-pages). - Paper size choice. - Cropping function. - Send it immediately or later by email. - Process is completely made on your iPhone and not on a distant server. So you can safely process any confidential doc. - You can process any number of pages you want, it is free and unlimited. - Choose image size and JPG compression level."
Reviewer's Description:
iScanIt scans document to a PDF, stores it on the iPhone, and allows you to email the PDF. It didn’t provide any provisions for uploading to the web or syncing to your PC. You can apply one of three filters that include color, newspaper, or fax to the image before processing. If you scan multiple pages into one PDF document the same processing filter is applied to all pages in the group. The cropping utility allows you to adjust each corner of the area to be processed individually, allowing you to compensate for perspective problems. Overall scan quality was OK, not great. You can preview the processed results and rescan if necessary. There was no help available in the app and the web site provided a few basic instructions. The iTunes links to the developer’s site we not working when I did my test. The interface is simple and useable after a couple minutes of familiarization. Time tagged scans are saved in the app. The only way to transfer the scanned PDF files is via email.

Reviewer's Description:
CardSnap does all the OCR processing on their server. CardSnap is presented as a ‘business card transcription service’ that involves automated and manual processing. The results were the most accurate of all the apps in this category even on a photo style business card. One drawback is the processing time. It can take about 24 hours for the card image to be processed although it was just overnight for most of my tests. I didn't see any info on where or who was doing the human review.  There might be a concern on how this will hold up as volume increases. When you open the app it checks for cards that have finished processing and presents them for import into contacts.   While the cards are being processed you can still view the original image. One problem I had when trying to scale and crop an image was the aspect ratio of the scaling screen. It was square and when I tried to crop an image I had trouble getting it centered without cutting off the ends. They advertise unlimited cards with no s

ScanR Business Card Scanner captures the image and uploads it to the ScanR web site for processing. You receive the card back in email as a .vcf file that can easily be imported into your contacts. It takes a couple minutes after the image is uploaded to receive the OCR’d results back in email. The note field in the .vcf results contain all the text that didn’t fit into a contact field. The app did a decent job of the basic scans and provided slightly better performance in the color photo style business cards. Good FAQ style help and a very simple interface that walks you through the process.

ScanBizCards is not limited to scanning business cards. Try it on: - Billboards - Signs in store windows - Take-out menus - A picture of a TV screen - Any printed matter "
Reviewer's Description:
A clean interface and very accurate scan results along with the ability to crop the image before scanning. Cropping out logos and miscellaneous text before scanning really helps recognition accuracy. The app highlights phone numbers after scanning and provides an option to allow dialing from the scanned image. You can also rescan just a portion of the image, which is helpful if you want to rescan a section around a logo. Strong built-in help and a nice context sensitive guide for your first round of captures make this solid product.

Reviewer's Description:
CardReader was the only scanner in either category that offered image stabilization, or ‘shake mode’ as they refer to it, on the camera while the image is being captured. It uses the accelerometer to delay image capture until the iPhone is held steady. OCR accuracy was decent in all except the photo business card category. The app supports OCR in 15 different languages, although I only tested English. The app included context sensitive help that walked you through the process during your first round of business card captures. Pre-scan options include OCR speed, Image Enhancement, and a Perspective Card view. I didn’t really see any difference in the use of the Perspective option. The main screen shows your entire contact list and includes a neat feature that switches to a cover flow view of the contact images when you rotate the phone to the landscape view. I try a lot of different things during my testing and the app did crash twice during my testing.

Developer's Description:
"Business Card Reader scans and ""reads"" the picture using ABBYY's text recognition technology and enters the data into appropriate fields of the iPhone address book. No more boring manual input of the names, phone numbers, emails and other information from business cards! Business Card Reader creates complete and accurate contact information on iPhone in a few seconds. Recognizes English, French, Italian, German and Spanish business cards. Added Value: In a built-in browser it is possible to make LinkedIn search of a scanned contact and read LinkedIn profile not leaving the program. Embedded browser uses the same filtering as Safari: if Safari is disabled this app will also turn off the browser. Business Card Reader is of great value for anyone who communicates with many people in work or personal life. It's an excellent tool for business professionals, exhibitors at trade shows, exhibitions attendees and sales personnel."
Reviewer's Description:
Business Card Reader like several of the others provided very accurate OCR results without the need for any pre-scan configuration options. Like all but one of the other scanners it didn’t handle photo style business cards very well. After the in-app processing you can access the recognized info as plain text and there’s also a ‘LinkedIn’ lookup function. I had one crash during testing, but overall a solid product.

This review is part of a series on eBook readers.  Because the readers are intended for different purposes the criteria for ‘Import Options’ was evaluated based on the applications intent.  The reviewed apps were divided into three main categories; commercial, non-commercial (free books), and speed readers.

Barnes and Noble Books provides this powerful eBook reader for free. It is, however, limited to books purchased through the B&N online bookstore. If you're a B&N customer or a new ebook reader looking for an app and source for commercially published books this is solid choice. I also tested Kindle for the iPhone and really like the B&N reader better. I guess the decision maker will be a look through both companies online book selection to see who does the best job of providing the types of books you're looking for.

The built-in help was by way of a manual included as one of the default books. You have to leave the book you're reading to get to that help.

This app includes a couple nice extras. You can annotate the text and a version of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary is included for free. It may be worth downloading the app just for that free dictionary. Probably the top contended if you're looking for an app to read commercially available books.

Stanza has been around for a while and is a power player in the free reader category. You can purchase eBooks from Fictionwise; download from Project Gutenberg and other download from other site; or add your own documents(ePub, eReader, PDF, Mobipocket, or MS Reader) using their free desktop application (MAC or PC). Another neat feature allows you to transfer to the iPhone directly over USB using 'iPhone Explorer' (http://www.iphone-explorer.com/). Check the FAQ (http://www.lexcycle.com/faq) for details.

The user interface allows all the desired configuration options with only minor exception.  It didn't include an autoscroll and the help is via a web link that takes you out of the app.  Stanza does include access to an online dictionary and allows annotations.

I've had Stanz on my iPhone since it was first released. For free this is a must have if your an avid reader. -Alan-"

Amazon's Kindle eBook device has received a lot of press. Unfortunately I've never had the opportunity to try one. After testing this and the other commercial eBook readers I was surprised Kindle for the iPhone didn't fair better. It is missing a few of the user interface niceties the other apps included. It does have annotations, but was missing the dictionary lookup feature.

One strong point of the Kindle is Amazon's Whispersync, which uses the the network to sync bookmarks, notes, and reading location between the iPhone and your Kindle device.

Amazon's large selection of eBooks is one thing going for the iPhone version of the Kindle. I've been using the Kindle since it was released on the iPhone and have purchased a few books through the Kindle for the iPhone.

Not the strongest, but backed by Amazon well worth a look. -Alan-

eReader is the same as B&N eReader is just like the Barnes and Noble reader as far as function and operation. Books are purchased from eReader.com. The site didn't appear to have quite as good a selection a B&N. The app has a place to enter the link to a site with books in the .pd. format.

They offer an application for the desktop to allow you to create your own books from files on your PC. The app is available in MAC and PC formats for $29.95.

Other than this the operation was exactly like the B&N app.

This review is part of a series on eBook readers.  Because the readers are intended for different purposes the criteria for ‘Import Options’ was evaluated based on the applications intent.  The reviewed apps were divided into three main categories; commercial, non-commercial (free books), and speed readers.

Some of the speed readers I tested used Rapid Serial Visual Presentation that involves displaying a single line of text that progresses at the selected speed. This app displays a whole page with blocks of text highlighted. The highlight moves down the page at the reading rate you've selected. I actually think I like this whole page mode better than the RSVP method.

Although advertised as a speed reading trainer this app actually offers many of the features of a full ebook reader, minus the ability to download new books. The developer told me he is considering adding this feature in a future release.

It has a nice set of display control options, but lacks a search and dictionary feature. I guess if it's main intent is speed reading training those wouldn't be considered prime features.

Nicely done and a good choice if you want to work on increasing your reading speed.
